Napoli’s Aurelio De Laurentiis: Champions League progression is a starting point for the future

The supremo of the Italian side has hailed their qualification for the knockout stage following the win over Villarreal, and is hopeful their feat can ignite an era of success.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has proclaimed that his team’s progression to the Champions League knockout stage is a ‘starting point’ for the future.

Speaking after the 2-0 win over Villarreal on Wednesday to confirm their status as Group A runners-up, the patron expressed his ambitions of building on the achievements of Walter Mazzarri’s men, and writing a new chapter of history.

“The work done in recent months is equivalent to the work of three years,” De Laurentiis told Sky Italia. The important thing is that three Italian teams have passed the group stage, and this evening is a turning point.”

However, De Laurentiis admitted he was concerned at the underwhelming start Napoli had made to proceedings at the Madrigal, putting their deficiencies down to their inability to shoulder expectation, but voiced his pleasure at seeing his side develop as the match wore on.

“I saw at the beginning that our players felt the pressure of the game, but then there was a period when Villarreal put us in difficulty,” he continued.

“We were a bit numb, but the Manchester City goal played a dirty trick to our players during the interval and I was very annoyed by our attitude.

“In the second-half, fortunately things picked up, it’s important to have matched the same result as Maradona’s Napoli, we passed a difficult group, and the team has matured.”

Napoli return to Serie A matters on Sunday with a trip to Novara.
